No. Although Lexus Hybrid Drive technology allows the vehicle to operate on electric power at slow speeds when petrol is in the tank, it is not designed to run without petrol. Doing so could cause severe damage to the Hybrid system, so drivers should be sure to keep fuel in the tank at all times, just like a conventional vehicle.

During strong acceleration, and when maximum power is required, Lexus Hybrid Drive activates and simultaneously uses its internal combustion engine and electric-drive motor for exceptional performance. When the electric-drive motor complements the petrol engine, it provides higher torque, which in turn results in smoother acceleration, free from any gearshift lag. With regenerative braking, the electric motor functions as a generator during coasting and braking. Energy that would normally be lost as heat is captured as electrical energy, which is then used to recharge the battery.

No. The petrol engine of the vehicle charges the Hybrid battery as needed. Lexus Hybrid battery does not require charging from any external source. The Lexus Hybrid Drive system automatically recharges the traction battery when its power is low.
