LEXUS ADDS DESIGN FLAIR & IMAGINATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
TO LUC BESSON’S SCI-FI EPIC VALERIAN
To celebrate its creative partnership with Luc Besson’s sci-fi epic, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, luxury automotive brand Lexus, has today unveiled a sneak peek behind-the-scenes of the SKYJET collaboration, as well as the brand’s design and technology philosophy that inspired elements of the final SKYJET, in a way that has never been seen before.
LEXUS HAS SPENT THE PAST 28 YEARS DEVELOPING A REPUTATION AS A MAKER OF LUXURY CARS. NOW IT HAS TURNED ITS ATTENTION TO THE WATER
On a cold, wintry day in November, the Lexus Sport Yacht concept darts smoothly across choppy breakers, first left and then sharply right. A frothy white wake trails in deep bluegreen water – a great sweeping pattern. This sport yacht concept is Lexus’ first. Its hull is stepped, hydrodynamically designed to create as little friction at high speed as possible, thus increasing its velocity – and the number of stares it receives from onlookers. Its engines, muscular and commanding, enable its captain to push the yacht’s speed to 43 knots, which puts it close to the top of its class, if not right at the summit. In other words, the Lexus Sport Yacht concept can move.
Engineers put speakers through a lot of tests on the way to your ears, and one of them is an anechoic chamber, a room insulated against sound bouncing off walls (anechoic means “without echo”). In the total absence of sound, you start to hear things that have always been there: the sound of your heart, the quickening of the blood in your veins, the eerily mechanical clicking of your many valves opening and closing. After a while, you get disoriented. You may even start hearing things that have never been there: astronauts put into anechoic chambers report hallucinations caused by the brain’s inability to deal with pure silence. Where astronauts dare to tread, that’s where good speakers are born.
